Getting your hands dirty

Ezra 5

This period of time in the Bible history of Israel is the most fascinating to me. The period known as the Restoration excites me know end. After an abject period of defeat and desolation God's people finally after decades embark on a journey of restoration and rediscovery.

It is a period full of optimism but tinged with difficulty. The challenges were huge. The entire infrastructure of a nation had to be rebuilt and reshaped. It was a journey that in itself took decades and numerous leaders to accomplish the task. Along the way there were victories but also defeats.

Sounds like an exciting journey to be part of. Sounds like the journey of the church. Along the way I am sure many people got disheartened and gave up. Maybe they looked at the piles of rubble and could not see the glorious city that God had planned and maybe they walked away.

Establishing God's kingdom to earth is no easy job. In church life we can sometimes see more rubble than God's answer for the world. But this is not a short term fix but a long term building project and we are in it for the long hall.

Just like the great Prophets of this generation Haggai and Zachariah they decided not just to talk about it they got their hands dirty. (v2)
